Caldas de Penacova

The natural mineral water aquifer of Serra do Buçaco, has two extraction sites – one in Luso and another in Caldas de Penacova. It is composed of very poorly soluble quartzite rocks, giving the water a low mineral content.

The Company Águas das Caldas de Penacova was formed in 1991 with the aim of exploiting the aquifer in Serra do Buçaco, having determined the aquifer depth with deep soundings, and then having requested that the water be classified as “Natural Mineral Water” and having been awarded a concession to exploit the resource with the signing of the concession agreement on June 2nd 1997.

Within 2 years of signing the concession contract, the bottling plant was planned, licences were obtained from the various entities involved, and the factory was built and equipment installed, with production starting in April 1999.

To ensure the best operating conditions and product quality, there is a laboratory controlling microbiological parameters from the beginning of the process where the PET packaging is produced within the factory to the final bottled product.

Initial counting with a total covered area of about 2000 m2, the need to respond with utmost professionalism and skilled resources to market demands, have led to a permanent expansion of its facilities, currently with 8000 m2 of total area covered, with 5000 m2 for the warehouse.

Gaining increasing importance in its market sector, it is one of the leading companies in the domestic market. In 2008 it was considered at the SME Leader for its risk profile and performance. In December 1999, following a proposal from the company, the perimeter of protection of this concession was fixed (Ordinance No. 1060/99), and since 7th April 2000 the water has been in the “list of natural mineral waters recognised by Portugal” published in the Official Journal of the European Union.

The recharge area of the aquifer is located NW of Caldas of Penacova, 300 metres above the level of the resurgence (spring discharge area), in the Serra do Buçaco.

Given the value of the average annual temperature in the region (tm = 13.9°C at the Buçaco weather station), the springs of Caldas de Penacova lie at the boundary between the thermal and non-thermal, with of temperatures at the spring discharge between 17°C and 19°C. The low mineral content of the water is due to the nature of the aquifer lithology – being composed of quartzite
